Surbiton Players Grab The Top Two Surrey Individual Trophies!

During the summer of 2015 the Surrey Individual Championships proved to be very fruitful for Surbiton participants. 22 Surbiton members entered across all of the competitions. When the dust had settled Mike Singleton had made it 5 years in a row for a Surbiton winner of the Slater-Kennington Cup. Mike joins Angus James, Steve Kearney, Koby Kalavannan and Paul Durrant in the Surbiton roll of honour for this trophy over the last 5 seasons. Mike won his section nicely with 5/6 (unbeaten) and then went into a play-off with Tony Hughes. It took quite a while but Mike eventually prevailed 2-1 to lift the trophy. Well done, Mike!

I don't really know what to say about me winning the Challenge Cup. Given the names on the trophy I feel very honoured. This should give hope to all chess players that anything is possible! I should give an honourable mention to Chris Briscoe who finished second and was also unbeaten. He beat the favourite and holder, Stephen Berry, in the process which was a great achievement. Chris won this trophy in 2011 when I was his runner-up, so maybe it was just my time.
