Surbiton Juniors Draw 34 Board Match Against Strong Korean Side

Photo by Stephanie Nakagawa on Unsplash

Chris Briscoe reports on a thrilling 34-34 drawn online match between Surbiton Juniors and PlayWell Korea:-

Today (26 April 2020) we had an absolutely massive match between us and the PlayWell club, a club the opposition captain tells me are one of the top chess academy sides in the whole of South Korea! They have between 60 - 70 children playing in that club and are based in 2 cities: Seoul and Yongin. They have 5 professional coaches working at that club, and their top 10 - 15 players are all internationals. Some of them have traveled aboard to play in junior tournaments, in places like Vienna, St. Louis, USA and even London.

The result was amazing....

Total                                                  34 - 34

Our board 34, would normally have been placed around board 24 for this match, but originally was unable to play, but then he was, and the Korean coach was able to get another player for him. You will see that we did slightly better on the top boards than the bottom, but that just shows how strong in depth the opposition are. When looking at the matches, there were no really weak players in the Korean team - so all credit to those who got results in this incredible 34 - 34 draw!

I would like to thank you all for playing, and hope you all enjoyed this exciting match!
